BBQ and Health – Is Barbecue Good for You?

BBQ sauces can vary greatly. For example, Eastern Style sauce out of North Carolina doesn’t use tomatoes, sticking to vinegar and various peppers. This leaves it rather clean, light, and low calorie.

Thicker, sweeter BBQ with a tomato-base will likely have molasses, and ultimately, more sugar in it.

However, tomato based sauces also contain Vitamins A, C, and E, which are antioxidants that help protect the body. These sauces also contain lycopene, a carotenoid that may reduce cardiovascular disease and prostate cancer.

Typically, BBQ sauce is also a source of magnesium, calcium, and potassium, all of which are beneficial to the body.

Lastly, BBQ sauce is low calorie and contains almost zero fat, making it a much healthier sauce option than, say, ranch dressing.

The Meats

As you probably know, meat is a great source of protein. BBQed meat is leaner and less greasy than fried meat. BBQ chicken and turkey are generally available those wanting a lighter meat. Though in terms of calories, pork is actually pretty comparable.

Ultimately, BBQ meat is big on flavor and surprisingly light on fat and grease.
