Rudy’s Barbecue Catering Inspiration: A Backyard BBQ Engagement Party

An engagement party is a great way to celebrate with your closest friends and family members before the chaos of planning the wedding sets in. With country-themed weddings being such a huge trend, we thought we would do a spin on things by featuring a backyard engagement party with – you guessed it – barbeque catering! Having your catering BBQ-style is fast, easy and delicious. Check out some fun and fresh ideas from your friends here at Rudy’s Catering!

Invitations
Spread the word of your backyard BBQ by sending out fun, brightly-colored invites to your guests. Don’t forget to include the essential information, such as date, time, address and perhaps a wedding website URL where guests can directly RSVP. You could also include your catering BBQ menu on the invitations to give guests a taste of what’s to come.

Signage
Welcome your guests with a colorful sign directing them to the party. Guests often aren’t aware of which entrance to use, so it’s helpful to guide them to the backyard with inviting signage. We also recommend using food signs for your entire barbeque catering menu. Be sure to indicate what the items are and whether or not they comply with any special dietary restrictions such as gluten-free, dairy-free, etc. Your guests will thank you for being so thoughtful!

Utensils
Love to DIY? Try creating a utensil station for every table. By having these stations at every table, this eliminates any traffic at your food stations, and guests don’t have to worry about balancing utensils on their plate while they try to carry everything to their seats. Plus, they are super cute and definitely fit the laid-back theme of a backyard barbeque.

Food
Since this is a backyard BBQ, stick to the classics with hamburgers and hot dogs, or our favorite BBQ pulled pork or chicken. It’s easy, inexpensive, and who doesn’t love these amazing classics? Keep your vegetarian friends in mind by including a veggie burger option on the menu.

As for the display, we love the idea of food bars loaded with toppings galore. Don’t forget to offer a few side dishes, such as grilled corn-on-the-cob or potato chips in individual containers. Yum!

Games
A wide variety of games at your engagement party is a great way for guests to break the ice and get to know each other better before the big day. Lawn games are perfect for a backyard BBQ. We recommend the bean bag toss, Twister, and, of course, Jenga!

Favors
Give your guests something to remember the evening by with mason jars filled with your favorite barbeque sauce. Or maybe try a koozie that doubles as a save-the-date for your wedding day!

Other Key Tips:

  • Mood lighting makes a huge difference. String cafe or bistro lights around the entire yard for a feeling of intimate ambiance. It also makes for gorgeous photos as the evening progresses and the sun sets.
  • Create efficient spaces. Try to spread things out to encourage guests to purposefully move around. Set up your barbecue catering food stations in one area, your drink station in another area, your favors near the door, games on the lawn and tables spread throughout the yard, and so on.

Although engagement parties are certainly not a requirement among wedding traditions, they are lots of fun and a great way to announce that you and your fiancé will be spending the rest of your lives together. A backyard BBQ engagement party is a laid-back yet intimate and romantic way to celebrate your love with family and friends.
