How-to Choose a Catering Company

Choosing your catering company may seem difficult at first. All of your choices offer great food and are somewhat competitive. This makes selecting a caterer more difficult than you might have thought it would be. If you’re stuck between several great choices, here are a few things to keep in mind to help you narrow down your options.

Look at your Overall Budget

How much do you have to spend on the event, and how stressed is your budget? If you’ve got a large budget and will probably not spend all of the money, you can afford to splurge on the catering and go with whatever meal you want.

The same is true if something like the venue cost came in under-budget by a significant amount. Go with your favorite caterer, your favorite meal, or the option that has the most extras if that’s what you really want.

However, if you’ve gone over-budget in one area or you’ve only got a small amount of money to dedicate to catering, you may need to consider the more affordable caterer. Remember that your catering budget isn’t an isolated amount of money. You might really want to hire a band for your wedding reception, for example, but don’t have the money. Cutting costs on the caterer might free up some extra money for the band.

Can you Create your own Menu?

Some caterers allow you to make substitutions to the catering menu. You might be able to switch out appetizers, salads, side dishes, or desserts. Other caterers may not allow this. If you really want to have certain foods at your wedding, you can use this as a way of narrowing down the field.

Meet with the Caterer

Don’t hire a caterer without meeting them in person. While corresponding online or over the phone can answer a lot of your questions, neither can replace meeting a person in real life. This lets you get a good measure of that person.

If you’re planning a major event, you want it to go off without a hitch, which means you need a reliable caterer you can work with. If you meet someone and you don’t really get along with them very well, they may not be the best caterer for your event.
